Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have a vital role in maintaining the balance of the coastal environment, both ecologically, economically, and socioculturally, especially as a habitat for marine fauna, protector from natural disasters, and a significant absorber of carbon (blue carbon). However, these ecosystems face a considerable threat of damage due to land conversion, causing degradation and deforestation that contribute to carbon emissions.  This study aims to estimate carbon reserves and carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption in mangrove vegetation  of Rhizophora stylosa species  in Pekan Bandar Khalipah Village, Serdang Bedagai Regency. The study was conducted in May 2025 using the purposive sampling method on five 20-meter diameter circle plots, with the measurement of tree diameter at chest height (DBH). Biomass estimates were calculated using the allometric equations of Komiyama et al. (2005) for above-surface biomass and Comley & McGuinnes (2005) for subsurface biomass, with the conversion of biomass to carbon-based carbon stocks of 50%. The results showed a total biomass of 89.82 tons/ha, with carbon reserves of 44.91 tons/ha and CO2 absorption reaching 164.82 tons/ha. This value is influenced by the relatively young age of vegetation (±5 years) and the average diameter of the tree of 8 cm. This study confirms the importance of the role of mangroves in mitigating climate change through carbon storage and sequestration, and can be a scientific reference for efforts to restore and manage mangrove ecosystems sustainably in coastal areas.
